New to the Sioux City school board: Cyndi Hanson wants to advocate transparency

Two incumbents, Bobby Michaelson and Jan George, retained their seats by finishing second and third, respectively. The top vote getter was newcomer Cyndi Hanson. She pulled in 21% of the vote. KTIV spoke with Hanson to see what she thinks this new leadership means for Sioux City schools. Hanson said this new leadership is about respect, listening, and transparency. Saying that people just want to be heard, and not ridiculed, and they know she is ready to listen. Throughout her campaign, Hanson says the number one thing people want is transparency. North Sioux City fire chief retiring, has had the job since 1989

The department told KTIV on Friday, Nov. 21, that Fire Chief William Pappas will retire at the end of the year, after serving his community for 35 years. The North Sioux City fire chief joined the department in 1986 and took on the role of fire chief in 1989. On Saturday, Aug. 2, a new North Sioux City training facility was named in the fire chief's honor. The facility was opened on Thursday, June 5. At the naming ceremony, he shared with KTIV's reporter, Nathan Price, the wisdom that he has given to his firefighters to keep them safe over the years. 12-year-old from Orange City to be honored at ‘Heroes Game’ for actions that helped save a teen from a fire

As part of the rivalry game, citizen heroes from each state are to be recognized. The Iowa hero this year is Jayce Koob, a 12-year-old from Northwest Iowa's Orange City. According to a Nebraska Cornhuskers press release, Koob is a 6th grader from MOC-Floyd Valley Community School District. In September 2025, Koob woke up in the middle of the night to heavy smoke and alarms, but was able to get out of the burning home and get help. "With no phone and alone, Jayce traveled almost a mile to alert neighbors in rural Sioux County to call for help. North Sioux City commission to spend nearly $4 million on purchasing lots affected by 2024 flood

(KTIV) - North Sioux City's City Commission has approved spending just shy of $4 million to buy 16 lots of land on Penrose Drive and Northshore Drive from its citizens. Those are two areas of the city that were devastated by flooding in June of 2024. Back in October, the City Commission decided to give those homeowners the opportunity to voluntarily opt in to the city's land acquisition. In the end, the city bought 16 lots along Northshore Drive and Penrose Drive for $3,982,590. North Sioux City Mayor Chris Bogenrief says the city commission had three ways to determine the value of each property: The city offered the largest of the three valuations to each homeowner. Sioux City Police Department advises people to stay off roads

Sergeant Mark Huberty says there were less accidents Saturday morning and attributes it to people staying home. However, accidents are still happening. "People are just driving too fast for conditions. And, we're getting a lot of accidents where people are just driving off the road, hitting light poles, street signs and such.
